Here We Are (working title)

27 March – 7 June 2026
Aspex, Portsmouth

Here We Are is an exhibition about the idea of home, not just as a place, but as a feeling. Home can hold us, protect us, and help us feel safe. But for some people, it can also feel small, stuck, or hard to leave.

For learning disabled people, home can bring comfort, but also limits. Sometimes it’s shaped by routines, systems, or a lack of choice.

The exhibition is inspired by over 500 real-life stories from learning disabled people in Portsmouth. These stories talk about independence, resilience, imagination and care. They show what it means to live a full life, both inside and outside the walls of home.

The final artwork is still being developed. But you can expect something you can walk into, explore, and touch. Nothing is off-limits. Some parts might feel warm and familiar. Others might feel unusual or surprising. This space asks you to think differently about what “home” can mean.

The exhibition has been created by This New Ground’s Inclusive Arts Committee — a group of 13 learning disabled artists working together to make one large, collaborative piece. In addition, we have commissioned two learning disabled artists to create individual works in response to the same theme.

Here We Are invites you to slow down, listen, and think about how we make space and who gets to feel at home.
